Friends of Blacklick Creek

This group has been formed to care for the Blacklick Creek Watershed. Here are some tips to promote and maintain creek health:

  • Protect corridors of natural vegetation along creeks.
  • Keep litter, trash, junk (such as old appliances), and lawn and garden waste away from stream banks.
  • Do not use automotive products, household chemicals, and lawn & garden products in places where they can enter the creek.
  • Use environmentally friendly lawn and garden care practices.
  • If you have a septic tank or aerator system, inspect the system on a regular basis.
  • Use paving methods that allow water to soak into the ground.
  • Use planting techniques to reduce erosion.
  • Protect wetlands.
  • Avoid driving vehicles of any kind in streams.
  • Report fish kills or other water quality problems.
  • Establish a conservation easement along creek corridors.
  • Join a creek protection group.

Here are some tips for farmers to promote and maintain creek health:

  • Keep a natural corridor around any creeks that flow through your fields.
  • Prevent runoff from manure storage areas and pastures from entering the creek.
  • Restrict livestock and barnyard animals from having direct access to the creek.
  • Keep feeding areas for livestock away from creeks.
  • Protect against erosion when clearing the land.

Here are some tips for developers to promote and maintain creek health:

  • Protect creeks against eroded sediments from construction sites.
  • Preserve an adequate area of vegetation along the creek

Possible Community Projects:

  • Organize or participate in a storm drain marking project. The Friends of Blacklick Creek welcomes volunteers to stop by the Township Hall located at 6545 Havens Rd. and pick up some storm drain markers that state "No Dumping - Drains to Blacklick Creek". You can post these on the drain covers in the area to help alert people to the dangers of possible contamination.
  • Organize or get involved in a stream enhancement project
  • Write letters, attend public hearings, and urge elected officials to adopt laws and policies that protect creeks.
